Contact
Lenses
“If eyes were made for seeing then beauty is its
own excuse for being”. This line taken from the poem “Rhodora”
simply puts that our eyes are as important as the other senses in
appreciating beauty. But how on earth can anyone be grateful for
the beauty all around when one has an eye problem? Nearsighted or
farsighted eye defects hinder anyone from using the eyes to their
full extent.
Before contact lenses came, the
refraction problem of the eyes was remedied using graded eyeglasses
or spectacles. But with the inconvenience that eyeglasses bring,
contact lenses or “contacts” were born. Contact lenses provide
better vantage vision among users since they are worn jus on top of
the eye’s cornea. They are unaffected with the changing weather
conditions especially during wet ones. No wonder why they have
gained mass appeal because wearing them doesn’t make anyone look
older as the eyeglasses caused. They are proven to be more
advantageous especially those who are engaged in sports much more
on athletic competition. Contact lenses have two different types,
the hard contact lenses and the soft ones.
Today contact lenses come in
different colors and designs. They do not only serve to correct
vision problem, they are used for aesthetic purposes as well. Many
people are now using and have benefited from the use of contact
lenses. But do these people know that it was actually Leonardo Da
Vinci who has given his successors the idea of correcting eye
problem, though his project was not intended to do the same.
Many famous scientists following Da Vinci had
made their respective studies that concern the eyes. The likes of
Rene¢ Descartes, Thomas Young, and John Herschel have at one point
made a study with the eyes either for eye accommodation mechanism
or to correct vision problems. It was Adolf Eugen Fick who
successfully made and wore the first hard contact lenses that were
made from rather heavy material that measures in diameter
18-21mm.
With the aim to make contact lenses more
convenient to use, polymer-based substance were utilized to produce
soft contact lenses. Otto Wichterle has just made himself popular
with his works on soft lenses that are made of hydrogel. The
success of the invention has made the manufacture of soft contact
lenses through out the world. They are proven to be more convenient
to use compared to the first versions of contact lenses.
Today contact lenses come in different
classifications. Others are categorized according to its usage
while some fall under according to the materials used. Other
classifications include the length of time the lenses were used and
the focal points needed.
Wearing contact lenses can
enhance better vision and truly make anyone to appreciate what
beauty is as far as the eyes can see.
