Choosing Contact Lenses for Astigmatism
Choosing contact lenses for astigmatism is
complex but not hard. Since it involves an array of clinical tests,
initial cost for astigmatism could border somewhere costly. That is
why choosing contact lenses for astigmatism should
be deliberate, with every choice considered.
Astigmatism is a refractive eye error and a
common eye affliction with its levels occupying the broadest range.
Some astigmatic won’t have any problems at focusing on nearby
things and probably won’t notice the loss of depth at farther
instances. These asymptomatic astigmatic will only learn of their
condition if they happen to try on toric glasses with their (or
approaching) diopter, which is of course unlikely. But those that
have higher conditions will experience blurred visual acuity to the
point that dizziness, nauseous, eye fatigue and headache.
Toric lenses are the known treatment for those
that have this eye disorder. While the most staple use is by rim
glasses, today’s more demanding world filled with activity has led
to the use of contact lenses as the more radical treatment for
astigmatism.
It is even decided that the best cure for
astigmatism is the usage of hard toric contact lenses (or RGP –
Rigid Gas Permeable) since it also presents a therapeutic effect of
conforming the cornea to the form of the lens. Some researchers
claim that it also slows down the degeneration of the eye into high
level astigmatism of younger individuals; aside from the fact that
under many instances, RGP contact lenses are more health beneficial
than soft contact lenses. However, RGP contact lenses are harder to
get accustomed to, with a period of several days before comfort can
be gained. Furthermore, RGP contact lenses needs to be used in
regular fashion or else the ‘getting used to’ will be yet another
obstacle.
To avoid discomfort however, hybrids can be a
choice. Using both soft and hard contacts, a technique known as
lumping can give the benefit of both designs: soft lenses for
greater comfort and hard lenses for better acuity. Take note that
only your eye specialist should choose between existing models to
have a combination that’s best for you.
So we know that toric contact lenses are
contact lenses for astigmatism. Toric contact
lenses are available for those that disdain the use of glasses. And
for further cosmetic reasons, tinted toric contact lenses are also
available, especially over the internet. But then again, consult
your doctor before buying.
